The Science of Diabetes Sugar & Glucose |

There are many ways of arranging the 24 atoms that make up glucose. Emil Fischer first determined the structure of glucose in 1901. Fischer was a famous German chemist. In 1902 he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on carbohydrate structure as well as purine synthesis. When the glucose molecule is drawn, it can be shown as a "straight line" structure. This is called a Fischer projection after Emil Fischer.
In nature, glucose normally exists in a "ring" structure.
Glucose (Haworth projection) This is called a Haworth projection after Norman Haworth. He also received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1937. Page 1 - Sugar & Glucose - Page 3 - Page 4 - Page 5 - Resources
